Katy Ware was appointed as the Director of Maritime Safety and Standards at the MCA in April 2016, responsible for the UK flag and port State control regimes, including survey and inspection operations as well as the UK’s safety, security & environmental regulatory regimes.
Katy is responsible for all vessels registered on the UK operating in UK waters including the domestic passenger ship and fishing fleet, UK vessels operating outside UK waters and foreign flagged vessels in UK waters. Katy is also responsible seafarers training and certification, the UK Navigational safety regime and Civil Hydrography Programme.
The UK Ship Register has recently been integrated into Katy’s portfolio.
Katy is Senior Responsible Officer for the MCA’s Survey and Inspection Transformation Programme, delivering on the modernisation of the UK’s survey and inspection regime.
From 2011 Katy was appointed the Permanent Representative of the UK the International Maritime Organization. Katy currently retains this status with her current role. As Permanent Representative of the UK to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), is responsible for the oversight and negotiation of UK policy and interests in relation to international maritime matters within the IMO and EU.
Katy leads a diverse work force of over 350 staff, including operational surveyors and port state control officers, technical policy officials, legal and economic advisors and administrative support staff.
Katy is the first female Executive Director on the MCA’s Board responsible for all matters pertaining to the governance of the MCA’s business. In particular, strategic leadership; financial management; human resources; risk management; contingent liabilities and information and communication technology services.
